At this time when rumors of doomsday disasters continue and many areas are experiencing large and small earthquakes, the Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Department in Taiwan, which published the "Pet Disaster Prevention Handbook" as early as 2016, has recently actively launched the "Pet Protector Disaster Prevention Box". As the name suggests, this is a disaster care box that owners of pets should prepare. Because it is a demonstration, the quantity is limited and it is only given away and not sold. However, the Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Department said that it hopes that more manufacturers will be willing to join the ranks of manufacturing and sales in the future.

The "Pet Disaster Prevention Handbook" published by the Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Department in 2016 instructs citizens on how to carry and care for pets in the face of sudden disasters. The content covers escape routes, supplies, precautions for shelters, etc., and has been revised and updated many times. Recently, it has further cooperated with enterprises to launch the "#包一个家" ESG charity project to create a "Pet Disaster Prevention Box" with both design and practicality. As soon as it was unveiled, it sparked heated discussions on social platforms, and even city councilors helped to promote the unboxing post on Facebook.

The Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Department has launched a corrugated paper disaster prevention box, which is sturdy enough to be used as a chair, and the lid can be used as a cat litter box. The box also has enough capacity to hold folding bowls, feed, water, a leash, and emergency medication.

This novel disaster box is not only a storage tool, but also a creative way of life. It is made of corrugated paper and is environmentally friendly. The hexagonal structure can bear the weight of an adult, so it can be placed in the entrance as a shoe-changing chair. When a disaster strikes, it can quickly transform into two large-capacity trapezoidal suitcases, which can contain the basic living items for pets for 3 to 5 days, including feed, water, folding bowls, leashes, emergency medicines, and soothing toys or pheromone relaxation items corresponding to the different characteristics of dogs and cats. This disaster prevention box design has won international design awards such as the "2024 Golden Pin Design Award", "2024 Good Design Award" and "2025 iF Design Award" for its aesthetic and humanitarian spirit.

The Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Department explained the development concept, saying that through a survey of pet owners' needs, they are determined to solve the problems of "nowhere to put them in normal times" and "difficult to obtain in times of disaster" in one fell swoop, turning disaster prevention supplies into part of household items, and truly achieving the goal of "disaster prevention in normal times and self-rescue in times of disaster." The Animal Protection Department also reminded that if dog and cat owners can complete deworming, vaccination and health examination procedures for their pets in advance, they will have the opportunity to let their pets enter human shelters together, eliminating the risk of being forced to separate due to regulations or health considerations.

The Pet Disaster Preparedness Handbook, published in 2016, already has very detailed instructions for the daily and medical supplies that should be included in your pet's disaster kit.

The "Pet Protector Disaster Prevention Box" has not yet been put into full-scale production. The Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Department is actively negotiating with more businesses, hoping to bring this product to the market so that every pet owner can get it at a reasonable price. Before that, pet owners may wish to assemble the box themselves according to the "Pet Disaster Prevention Manual" and the recommendations of the disaster prevention box, and then place it in the entrance or on the escape route.

According to the "Pet Disaster Prevention Handbook", the "3R" principle of pet disaster prevention is Ready, Refuge, and Responsibility. In other words, being able to complete preparations before a disaster strikes is a deep respect for life; and only by making full preparations in normal times can you survive and overcome difficulties with your pets when a disaster occurs.
