The World Dog Alliance (WDA) believes that Vietnam's recent crackdown on cross-regional cat smuggling and pet theft networks not only highlights the scale and cruelty of the illegal dog and cat meat trade, but also exposes a public policy issue involving pet theft and organized crime. This means it is not just an animal welfare issue, but also urgently requires international coordination.
According to Vietnamese police and media reports, Ho Chi Minh City police rescued over 400 live cats in the operation, found approximately 80 cats dead, and detained several suspects. The incident has been reported by major media outlets worldwide, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, and New Zealand, demonstrating the international community's widespread concern about animal protection and pet theft.
The World Dog Alliance calls on governments worldwide to work together to protect dogs and cats from theft, consumption, illegal trade, and abuse.
