After South Korea passed a law banning the consumption of dog meat, 40% of dog farms closed

According to South Korea's Ministry of Agriculture in February, about 40% of dog farms in South Korea have been closed since a special law banning the consumption of dog meat was passed last year. According to Yonhap News Agency, 60% of dog farms in South Korea are expected to be closed by the end of 2025.

The special bill prohibits the breeding, slaughtering, distribution and sale of dogs for meat, and also includes subsidies and other support to support businesses to exit the dog meat industry. The bill will officially come into effect in 2027, and violators will face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won (22,768 U.S. dollars).

World Dog Alliance (WDA) has been committed to assisting South Korea in promoting and implementing the bill: In September 2024, the founder of the World Dog Alliance, Genlin, awarded the Korean animal protection organization KAWA the Golden Dog Award and donated US$100,000 at the World Dog Day in Seoul; in December of the same year, the World Dog Alliance made another donation to KAWA's dog shelter under renovation. The shelter is expected to be completed in mid-2025 and will mainly receive dogs abandoned by the farms.
